If you have been following weight watchers for any length of time, then you already know that changes to weight watchers plans happen every two years. SURPRISE! Only a year after Personal Points was rolled out, it's been confirmed that Weight Watchers is changing their plan again to go back to more of a universal plan for most people with a slight variation for diabetics.
The New Weight Watchers Points System for 2022 Explained

*This is from last year's changes, so you can see
what Personal Points was all about!*
In November of 2019, we were presented with three different plans, green, blue and purple. After deciding which plan was right for you, you were off! These changes were confusing for a lot of people, but ultimately, most found the plans to be successful! As of November 2021, the WW plans will be changing to PersonalPoints. What are the Changes to Weight Watchers for 2022? Here's what we know so far…
The New Personal Points Program is LIVE As Of November 8th, 2021 in the USA!
Check out this video to see how I answered my assessment and how it went for me!
What Zero Point Foods Are on PersonalPoints?
The best part about the new changes is that every person has a different set of zero point plans. That may be a bit difficult when it comes to sharing recipes, but we'll get through it together!
My PersonalPoints Zero Point Foods List
As a diabetic, I was extremely excited to see that the plans are taking that into account when calculating our new plans. Healthy fats like the beloved AVOCADO is now a ZERO POINT FOOD for me!
What Are The Best Recipes For PersonalPoints?
That's one of the difficult questions to answer because now the best recipes for personalpoints can vary for each individual person. The best thing to do is check out recipes that are already low in points (like the ones here on the blog!) and then use your app to figure out the points for YOU. Here are a few to start with:

- Each plan is customized to each individual person, which means no two plans will be exactly the same.
- Just like with the 3 different plans, there will be a quiz you will take to determine what your plan will include as far as total points for the day and what your specific zero point foods will be.
- You will EARN points for doing healthy things like eating healthy vegetables, how much water you are drinking and how much you are exercising!
- Weeklies and Rollovers are STAYING
- You will be given the option to choose your favorite starches such as brown rice, potatoes and the beloved AVOCADO!
- Choose from a list of your favorite proteins.
- These questions form a personalized list of zero point foods.
- “Healthy” Fats like avocado and almonds are now lower in points!
- Your recipes saved in the app will automatically adjust for the new plans, unless you did not include zero point foods.
- A new sleep tracker to help you get into a better routine. This includes a new partnership with Breethe to provide bedtime stories, meditations and sleep sounds.
- Mental Health Coaching! Breethe will have 5 minute coaching audios with behavior change techniques and mindfulness meditations. (Check out my post about eating mindfully too!)
How Are PersonalPoints different from SmartPoints?
Now, points will increase with added sugar and saturated fat, but will decrease with protein, fiber and unsaturated fats.
Foods That Have Higher Points | ZeroPoint or Low-Point Foods |
Fatty meats like bacon and hamburgers | Lean meats like chicken or turkey |
Sugary cereals | Oats |
Cheese | Avocado |
Potato chips | Pretzels |
High-fat dairy | Low -or fat-free dairy |
Drink More Water With Cirkul and EARN PersonalPoints!
I am absolutely obsessed with my Cirkul and I think you will be too! Especially now that the new programs rewards you for drinking your water. The flavors are zero calories, zero carbs and zero sugar… meaning you can drink as much as you want. There are a ton of great flavors too! Read more about Cirkul or Order Your Starter kit!
How are ZeroPoint Foods Changing?
That's the tricky part, foods that are on the zero points list for weight watchers are going to be different for each person because the plan is customized to YOU. In general, these are foods that you can expect to find for zero points on PersonalPoints.
- Non-starchy veggies
- Potatoes & sweet potatoes
- Fruits
- Yoghurt & cottage cheese
- Brown rice & quinoa
- Avocados (NEW!)

Speculations on the Changes to WW for 2022:
The 3 Different Plans will be going away. No more separation!
Yes, there will no longer be a green, blue or purple plan. I know this sounds awful to some, but never fear! Weight Watchers hasn't let us down so there's no need to worry. They've done their research and they know exactly what they are doing. They test these plans and tailor them to be the best that they can be before releasing them to the public. We just need to trust that these new plans are going to be better than ever. In fact…
The New Plan Will Be More Personalized To Your Needs and Wants
Another change coming is WW wants to cultivate partnerships with healthcare to incorporate nutrition and behavioral science in their plans. (This sounds a lot like Noom!)
There Will Be A Plan For Those With Diabetes and Insulin Resistance
As I mentioned above, WW seems to be moving in the right direction by accounting for those with blood sugar issues such as diabetes or insulin resistance. This could ultimately mean moving more towards low carb lifestyles!
Stoplight System Similar To Noom or Kurbo?
Based on the patent filed in April of 2021 by Weight Watchers International, it seems as though foods will be labeled in 4 categories such as Healthful, Less Healthful, Even Less Healthful and Least Healthful. They reference UK's Traffic Light System to label foods as to how they will proceed with the new program… “
I have found that one of the best tools to conquer emotional eating is to have accountability for my actions. While Weight Watchers has improved their approach to weight loss, Noom has been using psychology to dive in to our behavior and teach us how to conquer Emotional Eating once and for all. Check out their awesome program and see what a difference it can make for you!
WW “proposes a food group nutritional value calculator that inputs data such as that displayed in following the Traffic
Light Labeling system along with a consumer's selection of one of eight “food groups”. Based on the food group selection, the calculator carries out a corresponding decision-tree algorithm by comparing the input amounts of
selected nutrients against standard values specific to each of the separate food groups. Based on one or more such comparisons, the food is classified as either “Excellent”, “Very Good”, “Good”, or “Avoid”.
There Could Be A BIG Shift In The Online Marketplace to Include New Partners and Brands
In the WW Quarterly Earnings call, Mindy F. Grossman (President and Chief Executive Officer, Director) remarked that they are planning on rolling out an expanded marketplace to “have drop-ship capabilities as well as expanded assortment. We have a significant number of new partners that we'll be launching over the next week and beyond.” She also continued with “We are still in expansion of our own WW branded products, both products that we develop as well as future licensing discussions for certain categories.” which likely means we will see new WW Products coming out as well!
The New Plan Will Be Named Personal Points
On Instagram, @Pandemicpounds posted this screenshot from the US Trademark website showing that the new plan will be called PersonalPoints!

How Weight Watchers Works and What Are the Benefits
Weight Watchers is a successful weight loss program with over 12 million members in the US alone. It is the safest and most effective weight-loss plan as it has been around for more than 40 years.
The WW approach is based on four fundamentals:
–A focus on eating nutritious foods
–Exercise as a tool to help people reach their weight goal
–A healthy lifestyle that includes stress management, sleep, and an encouraging support system
–Behavior change through motivation and group support
Why is WW a Good Fit For Me?
While I can't say specifically that it's right for everyone, I can give you the facts and let you make your own decision. Weight Watchers is a weight loss program that offers meal planning, weight loss coaching, and community support to its members. Joiners are encouraged to focus on an eating plan rather than dieting which can help with long-term success. They are encouraged to eat more “lean” foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while cutting back on “unhealthy” foods like sugar-laden sodas or refined grains.
MyWW (formerly known as Weight Watchers) has easy guidelines that make it hard not to succeed in your goal of losing weight. They provide their members with an extensive library of user-submitted recipes and a large community of like-minded individuals who will keep you accountable and on track. This program is also budget friendly, allowing members to purchase as many or as little WW products as they need. The company also has many resources available for people who want more information about healthy living, from on-demand videos to access to experts on our team. It provides users with advice on topics ranging from dieting to stress relief.
How Has Weight Watchers Evolved to Fit the Modern Era?
Weight Watchers has evolved to meet the needs of today's modern, busy and health-conscious individuals. There's no need to count calories because Weight Watchers takes into account your lifestyle and offers a personalized plan just for you. With a myriad of tools and programs, Weight Watchers is the weight-loss solution that helps you live your best life.
Where Did You Get All Of This Information?
In this transcript of a public meeting about Weight Watchers, the following information was shared by Mindy F. Grossman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Director and Nicholas P. Hotchkin, Chief Operating Officer:
- The new WW program is currently engaging in clinical trials.
- The new points program is designed to simplify the plan to be easier for day to day life and more sustainable for long term health and wellness.
- They are aiming to make the new plan personalized for members to have more success.
- There will be a plan dedicated to helping members who are diabetic or insulin resistant.
Great changes! Especially the avocado, and that almonds are lower in points. I actually did WW in 2006 and that’s how I found out I had Celiac Disease. Great post lady!
I do not have diabetes and have not been diagnosed as insulin resistant but I have been diagnosed with PCOS. Do you think this would put me in the lower carb personal plan?
I can’t give medical advice, but I can speak from experience. I have PCOS and started as insulin resistant before developing type II. When I follow low carb eating, I feel better, my cycles are more regular and I have less symptoms from my PCOS. I definitely recommend trying it and seeing how you feel!
Do not waste your time or money on the NEW Personal Points Program that has recently replaced the WW´s 3 Colors Program. The former program, appropriately focused more on a person´s lifestyle and took into account each person´s health concerns and goals. It made sense and actually taught individuals how to eat correctly for a healthier life for the long term. This new version, as advertised by spokesperson James Corden, promotes ice cream in its commercials and daily ingestion of avocados in its ¨daily food points¨ tally. I could not be more disappointed. Who in their right mind would promote eating ice cream etc. while trying to promote the concept of weight loss in order to lead a more health conscious life. Mindy Grossman and the team who came up with the touchy-feely-dairy-sugar-avocado-Noom-like Personal Points Program need to return to the recently abandoned 3-color program or at least make it available to those of us who successfully used it. If they do not make it available, I will be cancelling my membership immediately.
I just heard you are taking my reward points away and giving then to a group of your choice. I want to know how I can choose some gifts for my reward point before you steal them from me.. or at least let me donate some of them to a group of my choise.
I’m not affiliated with weight watchers, I just write about what I know and share recipes to help! I’m so sorry I can’t help!
THis sucks…..I joined a couple of months ago not knowing it was changing. I liked the plan I had and now I see points for the things that were zero before. I have been on and off with ww for years. I am a life time member which means nothing now. I am not happy and confused now by what I can and can not eat.
